Sally’s Catalogue
February / March 2025
Please e-mail sally.dore@cantab.net to place an order
Welcome to my new Topsy-Turvy catalogue. I do have some lovely books, so I hope you’ll find something that
appeals.
The overall
theme of our Eighth Bristol
Conference – Twentieth Century Schoolgirls and their Books last year was “Mothers, Mistresses and Other
Role Models”, which lent itself to a huge variety of talks. The book of talks
will be published later this year, and in the meantime the talks from previous
conferences are available. A date for
your diary: we have decided we will go
for a ninth conference, so the next conference will take place from 24th
– 27th July 2026 (booking will open in the summer), and the overall
theme will be “Fresh Air and Freedom” (Betula’s more alliterative take on my
suggested “Open Air and Adventure”!)
Please feel free to contact me with orders between catalogues, don’t feel
it’s “too late”. My catalogue
contains my usual mix of second-hand and new books, with books for adults at
the end. New books are underlined.
A small discount on postage is given for titles ordered in advance of
publication, otherwise postage is in addition as with orders for
other books. (For the UK, postage for an advance order is £1.50 per book.)

S199) Dimsie Carries On; 1944 rep; OUP. This wartime book about
Dimsie, now a herbalist and married with children, has (Springdale’s) Primula
Mary and Anne as characters. A sound reading copy, it has an intriguing
inscription in ink on the rear blank endpaper: “Ecce advenit Dominator Dominus
: et regnum in manu eius et potestas et imperium”. I was intrigued and looked
it up, and apparently it’s part of the introit for the mass of the Epiphany:
“Behold, he comes, the Lord and Ruler : and in his hand the kingdom, and power,
and dominion.” £7.50

15-year-old Roger who, when his planned school trip to France has to be
cancelled in the summer of 1939, unexpectedly has to stay with his four younger
girl cousins for a holiday in Yorkshire. Part gentle story about an articulate,
somewhat eccentric and bantering family, part spy story, part poignant elegy
for the hot, cloudless days on the moors of pre-war England. Someone has put
little grey stickers a bit like space modules in the corners of all the
prelims, with some little added coloured pencil marks, so a reading copy, but
very sound and readable. £8

Roxhythe; 1932 rep; Heinemann. An intriguing book for Heyer fans; only her
second novel, it features Lord Roxhythe, courtier (and spy) to Charles II, and

its canvas is perhaps too broad and its pace slower than her later books, but a
good stab at the “serious novel” she always hoped to write. VG+. £8.50

the six, the different paths they chose, and how Diana’s divorce and then
marriage to Oswald Mosley and the subsequent fracture of the childhood
relationship with Nancy, led to the creation of “The Mitford Girls” and their
activities as a newsworthy entity, rather than simply six individual sisters.

English – The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour; 2004 H&S. A self-confessed
lazy anthropologist, Kate Fox turned her attention to the English (rather than

was making herself barge into ticket queues to observe reactions, something she
had to nerve herself to do! This is a fascinating book that, if one is English,
one reads with constant nods of “Oh yes, I do that”, and if one isn’t, one
reads with constant nods of “Ah, now I understand!” Fine in VG++ dw. £6
