Topsy-Turvy Conference on
Twentieth Century Schoolgirls and Their Books
17th - 19th August 2012
Following our conferences in 2008 & 2010, we are happy to announce our third Bristol Conference.
Sheena Wilkinson, prize-winning author of Taking Flight, will be talking about writing for teenagers "then and now".
Other speakers will include; Jenifer Blair on Ballet books, Inger Anderson on what puzzled a Swedish teenager about books written for
English adolescents,
and Claudia and Roxy Cavalera on the two sides of Joey Bettany. There will also be discussions about career books and much more.
The Venue Wills Hall is set at the edge of Bristol's Durdham Downs and
was created in the 1920s as a university residence around an existing Victorian house, with additions
to the accommodation being made in the 1960s and 1990s. There are lovely gardens, a purpose-built conference centre and
plentiful parking for all!
Our meals will be taken in the rather grand panelled Dining Hall and the bar will be open both evenings.
The Conference In response to your feedback after
our previous conferences we have decided to run this conference as a residential event.
(However, this is an experiment and if it proves too problematical we will revert to
the day format in future!) Non-residential places are also available. On the Friday, Registration will be from 5:00 p.m.
The bar will open at 6:00 p.m. and dinner will be at 8 p.m. Saturday will include the booksale with the leading dealers in children's books,
and will end with the Conference Dinner. The conference will conclude with tea on Sunday.
We do hope you will be able to join us!
Conference Packages
We have been able to negotiate extremely good rates for the accommodation in Wills Hall,
which is of course student accommodation, so basic but perfectly functional. Packages range from Saturday daytime attendance at £60 to
the full package in en suite rooms with dinner, bed and breakfast on each night, lunches, tea and coffee and all sessions, at £202.
There are non-resident rates and rates for standard rooms too.
